just add the film as normal to dvd profiler and either put it in a separate collection group or add it to one of the standard ones but with a tag saying "watched but not owned"

What's complicated or ugly about a category named Borrowed? You'd have a tab (similar to Owned and Wishlist) named Borrowed, which would have all your borrowed movies. They could have no numbers or they could have their own numbering system, either way they wouldn't have to be a part of your actual collection. And when you add the movie you would simply select to have it downloaded right into your Borrowed category instead of your Owned category.

I can't envision something that would work better.
