Being around these parts as long as I have, I've come to realize that we are a completely dysfunctional group.  We love this program, but we also have divergent ideas on what should and shouldn't be covered in any particular profile.  What is urgently important to one person is a complete waste of time to another.  When it comes to certain areas, we are free to separate from the on-line and track the information how we see fit.  But there is a limit to how far we can go local.

I would like the program to take this to the next level in the next big update to DVD Profiler (4.0?): Full Customization.  What I mean by that is there are several fields that are restricted by the software: Country of Origin/Locality, Languages, the number of fields for Studios, etc.  The customization option allows the users who want to expand these areas in our local can do so without affecting those who want to stick to the status quo.  The ability to add to these restricted fields, in a manner similar to how we were given genres.  This means we can add whatever custom items we want (for example, the Thermian language for "Galaxy Quest" or that one film you have from an obscure country).

The second, and bigger, feature request I have regarding customization is the ability to create custom fields.  Right now, the only way to create a custom field is to create a plug-in or a HTML window.  The problem with this is that it requires you to enter all the data in your Notes window and you need to use a lot of tedious HTML coding to get the required effect.

What I would like is a simple Custom Field Creator that gives you to three options (all based on existing fields, so there would be less work in creating this feature):

  • A Drop-Down Field (like Genres, Languages, Case Type, etc.) where you can create options that are used on a regular basis.  An example would be for those who want to track whether a film is Black and White/Color/Tinted/Sepia.  Like the customized genre field, you can enter these options and they appear in the drop-down menu for this field.

  • A Single Line Field (like Running Time, Edition, etc.) where you can enter data that only requires a short amount of info.  For example, if you want to add additional titles, like a translated title for foreign films or alternate titles; or keeping track of taglines.  A simple checkbox could be added during the creation phase to determine if the field is numeric or text.

  • A Full Text Field (like Overview) where you have a full text field for entering whatever lengthy text you need, such as a full list of the special features or essays/reviews on the film.  By including the existing tags that existing in overview (like Bold and Italics), you can handle whatever text you need.

  • I would also like to see a loosening on the restriction of characters to a particular field for the local.  I understand why a certain number of characters might required before cutting off for a divider or role name for contributing purposes, but if I come across something that is extremely long, I would like to handle it locally without having it cut off.

The features I am requesting would make the product perfect in my eyes.  I use the program on a daily basis and find myself frustrated by certain artificial limits placed on the data that seem to only satisfy the needs of the on-line.  All I want is for these limits to be removed for the local.

Yes!  I would love to be able to do this.

Another one I can support wholeheartedly.

The one other big feature I'd personally like added is the ability to profile all multi-feature DVDs the same, whether the movies on on different sides of the disc or only on different layers.  I hate having to create manual profiles to make my single-sided multi-feature DVDs profile like my dual-sided ones.

I would also love to have a free field or 3-2 with drop down lists I can create myself. Collectorz Movie Collector has had this for years so I'm surprised DVDP doesn't have this yet

I agree wholeheartedly with this request.

In fact, I once made a feature request covering the first part of it:

    http://invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=452241

But the second part would be a welcome addition also.

As for the custom fields, until the programme as them you can use Tags as a workaround.

  • The ability to specify whether an entry is b&w or colour would certainly get my vote!

While I am not against this great suggestion, but how is any of this going to work with a public database?

For example, one suggestion is to remove field size restriction for characters.  But, if user one still has it set for 30 characters and another changed it to 40, what happens to the database?  Is it still 30?  When the person with the 40 character field does a submission, I suspect that the last 10 characters will get truncated.  When the entry gets updated, the user with the 40 character field will get an update that is only 30 characters.

Please enlighten me as to how this would work?  I'm sure that TPTB would like to know as well.

    Local only.

Not something I myself would want/need, my understanding is that nothing happens to the online database. Local only. Non contributable.  (Think genres, notes...)

What I would like to see is more than the 10 entry limit under collection categories. I am assuming it must be some sort of database constraint or something though.

Yeah, my whole idea was the ability to track any field you wanted locally.  For example, if you wanted more film related info (like the exact date the film premiered, the budget, the boxoffice, numbers, etc.) you could do it yourself.  Same goes for disc info (like if a Blu-ray is 1080i or 1080p, specific people on a commentary track, etc.).  It could be shared in the sense that the community could swap info the way we do for plugins or manual profiles.
