Wanted to Use world renowned Andre Previn today but found out  conductors ( who even win multiple oscars are not allowed for contribution to Profiler unless they wrote the music.
I Love musicals and found through a search of titles and using wiki that Andre Previn who according to wiki has these awards:Academy Awards
Best Music – Scoring of a Musical Picture
1958 Gigi  (own)
1959 Porgy & Bess
Best Score – Adaptation or Treatment
1963 Irma la Douce (own)
1964 My Fair Lady  (own)

Yet he isn't credited with any, because of the rules.. I checked my copy of Paint Your Wagon and that is the Only one he is credited with because somehow he got in by having his credit of Composer (along with Lerner and Lowe .. ) .. ??
But I feel conductors play a large part in 'movie going experience'  in expressing their talents with the music that was written  months or years later by others. They are the front line team in the editing suite .
So how do we get this remedied.. ??
Thanks

I agree with the OP.  I've been doing lots of Bollywood profiles lately and Choreographers and Lyricists who play such a big role in Indian cinema are also not contributable.  The entire crew section could use an overhaul.

Personally it doesn't matter to me one way or another if this information is included.

Put me down for a "not opposed".

I agree with Terry that this would be a nice addition to the music categories. It's only within the past 30 years or so, I believe, that the Oscars have restricted the scoring award to original scores. For several decades, awards for scoring with unoriginal scores or adaptation scores were given. Often this would be noted as Musical Director or Musical Direction.

I don't care for most of the ones we have, and wouldn't use any of the ones suggested in this thread.  Mark me down as indifferent with negative leanings as I enter each and every allowable crew credit.

I don't have a problem with what the OP suggested.

But I would like to see an addition called Theme Song by for TV series theme songs.

Personally I think Song Writers should be only for original songs for movies, and not also for songs written for a TV Series.

Now we do have Theme By credit but that doesn't really cover the Theme Song for TV Series. Such as Gilligans Island, which right now is credited as song writers. Mostly Theme by credits are instrumental themes, such as the Star Trek opening theme.

So something like the following.

Composer stays the same.
Song Writers, for Original Songs written for movies only
Theme Song by, would include both the composer and Song Writer for Theme Songs written for TV Series.
Theme By, would include instrumental theme songs composed for TV Series or where the credit specifically says Theme by.

Theme by should be used for both film and TV.  As Pete reminded me in another thread, TV was one of the reasons the credit was requested.  Whether it is instrumental or words and music, the theme song is the theme song.

I'm not sure I understand, CubbyUps. Is there something in the current Theme by credit that you see that prevents you from recording TV themes as the Theme by? As Martian stated, it's been my understanding that the examples of the Star Wars theme and the Gilligan's Island theme would both be submitted as Theme by.

I go strictly by what the credit says. If the credits reads "Such and Such written by Joe Schmo" then that gets a Song Writer credit.

Whereas if a TV Series has a credit that reads "Theme by Jow Schmo" then that gets a Theme By credit.

So even though I know that "Such and Such" is a theme song for a TV Series and it's likely common knowledge the credit itself doesn't say Theme in and of itself. So according to how I read the rules the writer gets a song writer credit rather than a Theme By credit.

In that case, the rule needs to be clarified because that was not the intent.  Theme by was intended to be used for all themes, period.
