Hi,

Have done a search but nothing came up, so here goes...

I wondered if anyone knows if a barcode scanner will work to help catalogue my DVDs a bit quicker than typing in the code numbers every time? If a barcode scanner will work, is there any particular make or model that I should go for or will any type work?

Thanks in advance,

Jerseylover.

Check out the USB CueCat, easily gotten from eBay for $10 or less.  It'll handle all bar codes with ease but if you have one with an extra 2 digits, it's best to type those by hand.

Try searching the DVDProfiler site though Google. Our site search isn't very good, but through google I believe you will find LOTS of answers.

Hi, thanks for your replies. I've found the Opticon OPN-2001 scanner which looks good as it stores up to 10000 barcodes in its internal memory so no need to be in the same room as my PC when I am scanning barcodes. Anyone have any experience of this scanner or think it might have a problem working with the software?

Thanks.

Well....let me give you my own philosophy. Now you may have more in mind that i am going to refer to. I never liked the Cue cat, perhaps it was me, but it and I just never got along. Most barcode scanners  are relativey pricey, even the Opticon looks to be about $150 or so...that ;s a lot of DVDs or BDs. I could see having one if i were entering my collection of 4500 titles for the first time. it would probably be a genuine time saver. But for a small to even 1000 or more, I don't think the time-saving would offset the cost. On a week to week basis certainly not, it strikes me as more of a toy that a really useful tool for data entry., and by the time a title hits the streets I have usually had the UPC loaded in my system for weeks to months, thus obviating the need for a Scanner. Now if you are going to be periodically taking inventory of your collection or have other ideas beyond profiler....maybe. I don't know.

I really want a nice scanner myself skip... for the exact reasons you just said... periodic taking of inventory... you'd be surprised to find the results of an annual PI.

lol...

that being said... Jerseylover... the program will take any barcode scanner that inputs as regular text... which the vast majority of scanners can do.
