I always wondered about this. Why is the date shortcut on the personalize DVD view (clicking on the calender icon) "use release date". This makes no sense whatsoever. Why would you ever want to add the DVD release date as purchase date unless that day is today or you forgot to add a date and remember you bought it on the day of release.

The far more common situation though is that you want todays date as the purchase date. At least it's for all those people who use the date of delivery and not the date they ordered it. Now, seeing as I can't think of a good use for "use release date" and there's no way to ease things up for people using the date they ordered, I'd suggest changing this shortcut to "Today". I know there's a Today button in the pop-up already, but it's two clicks instead of one. Just switch those too (calender + today button). What do you guys think?

I am not entirely sure what you mean.

If I add a DVD today, the purchase date is set to Today. If I add something to the Ordered tab, I simply remove the purchase date completely. The moment I move this item from Ordered to Owned it will get the date of Today.

if I want to change the date, I don't use the pop-up at all, I find it much more faster to type the 8 digits than to jostle the mouse over my screen, especially when I have to change the month or even the year.

'Use release date' for me was a fairly useful tool when I started using profiler (only two years ago, now). I had started buying DVDs in 1998, and when adding them to my database I could hardly remember the exact day I bought them, 10 years later. Therefore I simply used  the 'Use release date' as my purchase date for these titles.

Doesn't do that here, just leaves it blank for me. Maybe a beta bug? I've been using the beta so long now I can't remember if it was like that before.

I just tried it with the 3.5.1 Build 1252 ands both cases work: "Add by UPC" with a title that's already Ordered and move from Ordered to Owned via context menu.

Seems to be a bug in the Beta.

I think I have this figured out.

"If I add something to the Ordered tab, I simply remove the purchase date completely. The moment I move this item from Ordered to Owned it will get the date of Today."

There's the key. I don't do that as it's just additional work when moving to ordered. The consequence is that there's already a date in the field when I move it to owned which makes it NOT reset to today which is good for those who want the "ordered" date as purchase date but not for us who want the arrival date as purchase date. Guess I'm out of luck then although I still think "today" could be more useful than "release date" for most users. Other than the case bizarre_eye describes I can't think of a good reason to use the release date.

I think the problem is that the Calendar dropdown is a fixed Windows component and it already contains a "Today" button. Ken can't replace it with a "Purchase Date" button, so you'd have the "Today" button twice and no/one "Purchase Date" button.

I don't know how fast your PC is but opening the dropdown and press "Today" takes less than half a second for me...

I like it how it is now.

Adding a DVD brings up the actual day.
With one click you can choose the release date.
Other dates or completey removing the date can be written in the text field or choosen in the calendar.

Oops, seems you are meaning the date at moving from ordered to owned.

I'm using the "ordered" very less, so I never took note of this.

In this case, I think some users see the order date as a date they purchased that DVD, so it would be correct as it is now.
And if you do a pre-order, the release deate button is useful as this would be (hopefilly) the day the DVD is delivered.

At mine, too. So adding the actual date should also be easy.

I, too, agree with Virus.  All my new release purchases are made the day of release.  I do not, however, always have time to enter them that day.  When I do get a chance to enter them, I use the release date button.  Two clicks, instead of one, really doesn't seem like a lot of extra work to me.

And this exactly the reason why Ken added this option (as far as I remember during a beta cycle following some user requests. I think it was during Profiler 2.x times)
