Without specific information, I guess I would have to say whatever is appropriate based on the copyright data(On Screen).

I would say it's the same as the DVD Release date.

The DVD in question hasn't been released yet.

I was just curious since someone recently changed the production year from 2007 to 2006, Looking at primary sources online, principal photography ended in December 2006, but post production work continued well into 2007.

I changed it back to 2007 anyway, because the contribution notes were basically the equivalent of "because I said so" as the reason for the change, and I was able to cite a source that stated they were still working on it into 2007.

But more seriously......we've had a discussion already (which is not yet settled if I'm correct) about production year and wether or not we should use the Theatrical release date or the copyright date in the end credits.

This "direct to dvd" question sheds a new light on this because it would open the door to many rounds of endless debates in the future if we start using credits date for "direct to dvd" releases, first air date for TV Series and Theatrical release date for movies.

Surely this as been an issue for quite some time? Disney has a habit of releasing sequels direct to DVD/Video. How have these been handled?

I interpret the current rule as: the production year should be the year when the film has been released for the first time in the world. Direct to DVD would be the first DVD release world wide, not necessarily in your locality. A film could also have a theatrical release somewhere in the world but is released direct to DVD in your locality. Anyway the oldest release would win in my opinion.

This is absolutely correct and the only way to go with the current set of rules.

But of course there's a current discussion to change production year rules to make you use the copyright date

This leads us back to the "source of information" discussion.  If a movie is released DtoD in my locality how am I supposed to find where and when was the first theatrical release, how am I even supposed to know that there actually was one.

This would be fairly easy if there is already a profile for that movie in the database but if there's not then where do I check ?

"Direct to DVD" means just that.  Direct from the producer/distributor to DVD.  No theatrical release whatsoever.

I agree with Touti and the others who said the DVD release date.  It's straight to DVD, making that the production date.  I even made that comment in my yes vote on your contribution.  I am not sure how that date change slipped by in the previous vote.
