I have gone through this numerous time so I am not sure it is necessary to do it again BUT, if necessary I will.

There is another advantage to the Open Association method of handling Aliases in Cast and Crew. Since there is NO PRIORITY name(Common Name) a user could assign as many different headshots as there are aliases for a given Cast or Crew member. This is something that has already been requested by several users and this solves both the Common Name conindrum and gives the ability for multiple headshots.

Mh, imho, not quite.

While it's true it would allow for multiple headshots for a few people, it's not the solution of the multiple headshot problem. Ken would still have to implement the necessary stuff (like space for multiple headshots everywhere they are shown). And how would the program know if they are differing headshots or not? If not, would it show 5x the same shot? These are the essential problems of multiple headshots, not saving them in the database, if a coder is able to save 1 shot in a database he can store as many as he wants.

And you're forgetting one thing here which makes the association method worse than the common name method in terms of headshots: People would have to assign a headshot to any alias. Which could mean up to 10 assignments per actor instead of 1. That's not only a lot more work, but it bloats up the database too.

Valid points, hydrox. Unfortunately not something i can test at the moment. The database bloat sincecwe are referring to text fies is not a major issue. The important part is that there is NO Common Name (Priority) therfore there is no need for the arguments we currently have going on. Which I can only speak for myself are certainly not pleasurable. As for any bloat caused by the images that is not on Online issue since the headshots are all local that falls soley within the pervue of the user relative to his database. Is it an issue, yes and I suppose a big issue for some, my database has grown from 6GB (remember I already use LARGE Cover Images) to over 7GB with the advent of headshots.

As I see it right now it is very simplistic each name in the association would have whatever headshot would be associated with a given name. Yes, Ken would absolutely have to do some coding to allow a search to show ALL headshots that are associated. Not sure how much that would get me going. but that's just me.

you might want to reword that sentence as one could miss that you are talking about your suggested method here!!

Honestly, i prefer a few discussions about common names (or just using my local ones) over having to add the same headshot multiple times. Plus, your solution would make a real full support of multiple headshots per actor a lot harder for everyone. (imho it should be a max of 4 headshots per actor anyways which would be enough for CHILD,YOUNG ADULT(~18-25, maybe 30)),ADULT,SENIOR(60+))

I noticed I forgot a pro common name argument:

I actually want to know what the "normal" name of a person is. I want to be able to tell if a movie credit differs from the norm or not. Storing the main common name of a person is additional valuable info to me, even if it was without any of the linking features it provides.

Ahhh Hydrox, the crux of the argument. The "normal" name, normal to whom, who decides that, using what criteria.

That's why I said "normal" I'm well aware of that problem, but it's of no relevance for my argument. It's still interesting so see a certain common name. No matter what method was used to decide on it, it tells you something about an actor and about the credits.
