From IMDB.

'The Long Good Friday' To Get Remake

Classic British crime film The Long Good Friday is getting a Hollywood makeover in Miami under the direction of Resident Evil moviemaker Paul W. S. Anderson. The 1980 original starred Bob Hoskins as a London gangster whose criminal empire comes under attack from a wave of mysterious bombings. But production company Handmade Films says the new movie would be "refreshed" with a modern setting. Chairman Patrick Meehan says, "The original was a highly praised classic and one of Handmade's most prized films, but its reach was limited primarily to the U.K. Following continued interest from the U.S., we realized this remake could attract audiences worldwide with an updated setting and contemporary overtones. When Paul presented his creative vision for this project, we were instantly convinced that this is a story that could be successfully refreshed, yet leave the integrity of the original intact." No actors have so far been cast for the project.

This is gonna suck like a really sucky thing.

So... [expetives deleted] Danny DeVito for Bob Hoskins maybe?

This is the worst [expetives deleted] idea that I have [expetives deleted] heard.

And I bet you they will [expetives deleted] take out the [expetives deleted] swearing and the [expetives deleted] smoking. They are right [expetives deleted]!

Oh [expetives deleted] it....

Probably end up getting the [expetives deleted] DVD of it. Because collecting the [expetives deleted] things is what I [expetives deleted] do.

This is truly the worst idea. Ever. Since the Psycho fiasco, anyway. But it gets worse. Empire reported the story from Screen International yesterday, but it isn't just Long Good Friday. To be fair, as they say, the other remakes do have a glimmer of hope because for a start Anderson isn't directing. I quote it here, because I think it's damn funny anyway ...

Quote:

This story would have been up sooner, but we had to break some stuff and scream at the heavens until we were hoarse. Screen International this morning reported that British gangster classic and sole memorable big screen outing of Charlie from Casualty, The Long Good Friday, is being remade. And....[deep breath]...it's being directed by...[count to ten]...Paul. W. S. Anderson. There, we said it. That's the hardest part.

Anderson, who brought us the joys of Resident Evil and Alien Vs Predator to name but two, is to direct the $50 million production for Handmade Films and Impact Pictures.

But, if you haven't already driven a stake through the heart of your computer for bring you such dire news, there is more. Where the original, brilliant film was a shocking, riveting look at the British gangster scene and featured stunning performances from Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren, the new version will be relocated to Miami. Great. Fantastic, Paul. Why don't you cast Don Johnson and a pair of plastic boobs with a slippery grasp of the English language, just to finish it off? And maybe smear a little dog poo on the print?

"The Long Good Friday was an astonishing view of 1980s gangland that shocked audiences with its urban crime and violence," said Anderson in Cannes, while singularly failing to beat himself viciously about the head and neck. "I am delighted to have the opportunity to put a new spin on this classic film which promises to reveal today's underworld in an equally shocking fashion."

In slightly less ragesome news, Handmade is planning this as a first of a series of remakes. Larry Clark is expected to redo Mona Lisa (why does Handmade wish to entirely erase Bob Hoskins from the cinematic landscape?). We're not doing backflips about that one, but Larry Clark is talented so we expect at least an interesting take. A big bucks remake of Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits is also planned. Hopefully someone better than Anderson will be secured for that. Like, a rake perhaps. Or a slightly dented baked bean can.

Also, I read today, there is going to be a remake of Taps.

That's all we need - a retread of a movie about shootings at a school.

Ach, all those original versions will still be in your collection or not? I wished they remade The Black Dahlia with David Fincher on board or that chap Helgeland.

After much speculation Quentin Tarantino has signed to direct a remake of Orson Welles' 1941 Classic "Citizen Kane".

This bold new move has come under much criticism from the Hollywood Foreign Press, but Tarantino believes he can produce "A f***ing great movie!"

Shooting is set to begin Feb. 29, 2008 with Uma Thurman playing Jedadiah Leland (now Jessica Leland).

No word yet on the remake of The Sound of Music with Ben Stiller portraying Maria.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
