Having played with MY MOVIES it is actually quite simple in how it works with the standalone media player to allow playback from the database.

Basically all that would be required would be for DVDP to store the paths to the media files/storage devices and have ability to generate a device compatible index at a location accessible to the media player. When the index location is selected on the media player, a gui comes up and allows you to use the database information via the index and, when you select a movie, starts playing it as the file path is in the database and therefore in the index files.

The index is linked to the database so that changes in the database update the index at the same time.

I would love to see this functionality added to DVDProfiler and would be happy for this to be an additonal cost feature for those that want it. I much prefer to work with DVDP as it is vastly superior to My Movies except I want the above functionality so have had to change. I presently will keep my DVDP in the hope that it may include this one day, so I will have to be updating two systems for now.

@btiltman
There is a function in DVDP called "plugins". It is a method designed by Invelos that allows authorized software developers to add features to DVDP independently of Invelos' decision to support those features in the future. Sometimes they do, somethimes they don't.

Anyway, without going into (yet another) annoying commercial, see here for a plugin that might help you. If it is not exactly what you need, PM me and maybe we can start a conversation about enhancements.
Thanks for your support.

My understanding of the quick read of that info a while ago was that it was a plugin that allowed the movies to be selected and played from DVDProfiler. Is that right?

Whereas the method I was describing was allowing a stand alone media player (Dune, etc) to play the movies directly from its interface using a database (cover, file descripton, file location etc) generated externally to DVDProfiler and stored on a network disk accessible to the player.

In fact, the PC with DVDProfiler on it does not even need to be turned on unless it happens to be one of your file storage locations.

If I have got the wrong understanding of the plugin, then let me know and I will do more reading!

Thanks.

Should be easily achievable with the XML-Export of DVD Profiler, the only question that remains is how exactly this DB has to look. As soon as this is clear we can either bash up a XSLT for transforming (that would/could be my job) or writing a plug-in or stand-alone program for doing it (that would/could be mediadoggs job) depending on how much work there is to do.

I could produce a simple index with some movie records in it and send it to you if you like? (As would be generated by My Movies)

I would have to install it on another computer to do this as my index directory is too large. (Although I could mail it to you on a dvd-r if you would like.

You are spot on, my friend. Thanks for taking the time to clarify it for me. I'll watch how this progresses, and if there is something I can contribute, I will. Otherwise, seems like Mithi is on this one ...

Well, not quite I'm afraid!
I had a chance today to look into the file btiltman send me, but the directory structure is way out of the scope of my simple XSLT. Not to mention the background-image for each title.
It seems that browsing through titles, genres, decades ect is achieved by simply creating multiple sub-folder-structures which then references back to a 'master'-folder which actually contains the info for the single movies.

The "dune_folder.txt" that lies in every folder on the other hand should be manageable.

If btiltman has nothing against it I could pass the download link on to you, mediadogg.

Sure....  no problem at all. I am really hoping this can be done and will do anything to assist you investigate it! Any other questions about how it works or looks welcomed too!

I did get the file, but I hadn't seen this post so I told Mithi I would pass since we heard nothing back ...

Meanwhile I did look at it breifly and agree with Mith that perhaps you should start with the TviX plugin. No need to recreate the wheel ... I'm already behind on a bunch of other stuff ...

Perhaps you could PM the author of TviX Plugin to see if he would join the conversation. I know of another user that is doing something very similar for XBMC. I'll mention this thread to him. This kind of requirement is the exact reason that I built the DVDProfileLoop plugin. That's what TviX uses (or used in the beginning - maybe it has evolved.)
