My personal opinion...

I think the forum community should know who is permanently banned.  Since this is the harshest of all punishment in the forums.  We should also know why.

As far as posting restrictions, I don't think we should be told.  Sometimes this is more of "go to your room and cool off".  Hopefully, after a couple of days, they come back and participate in a proper way.

We do see what the moderators are doing.  Every highlighted post that is edited or removed is a visible indication that moderators are there.  Unfortunately, moderating all the topics 24/7 is a tedious job.  We all wish that moderation would be quicker, and more even handed, but I do see an improvement in participation of the moderators.  It seems to come and go at times.

Charlie.

While I can understand that, IMHO if all suspensions/bans were shown it would act as a deterrent to some who would otherwise be tempted to push the boundaries, so the moderator's job would be easier.

As far as seeing Ken more,  I think he keeps an eye on what is going on in the threads.  He seems to pop in at unusual times.  I would like to see more of a presence, especially when questions have arisen that do need an answer, then again, maybe he would like us to work it out (even though it has been proven time and again, that we can't )

OR perhaps he is just enjoys the show!

If someone is acting in such a way that the result is they are banned, then their behavior is having an impact on the forum community. It is important then that those affected know that some action is being taken.

Anger and resentment can build up if there is no visible way to see that action is actually being enforced. If someone is banned it should be made public to the community.

The benefit to open and pubic discipline is two fold. It will  demonstrate to those affected by negative behavior that action has been taken. It might also act as a deterrent to those whose behavior is unacceptable to the community.

Well said Kathy.

It's not about being nosy although I can see why some believe it to be. I do believe that your first ban should be not shown though. I just feel that in this case it could negatively effect that person's future in the forums and it could very well have been a case where they were being more on the defensive than the attack. In other words:

First Offense: Warning

Second Offense: 24 hour Ban

Third Offense: 1 Week Ban (Public)

Fourth Offense: 30 day Ban (Public)

Fifth: Permanent Ban (Public)

Although all that said, severity of the offense should be taken into consideration as well as proximity. This is also depending on how strict banning really is, the more strict the more I support not making 24 hour public, the less strict (banning rarely happens), the more I support making it Public as it might stop the problem after their disciplinary measure.

This seems to be a very reasonable compromise...I wish I had thought of it.

He hasn't give any reasons why it shouldn't open who is banned. Can you give us some? Majority, who think it should be open, has given several reasons.

I don't it's mine (or anybody elses) business. That's between the user and the moderators. If it's a permanent ban, it can be listed as such after the users name, but anything else between that doesn't concern me, and it shouldn't concern you. The way I see it, that's just how things are done. Quiet and respectful, and not like a lynch mob gathering around the gallows

The thing is, the person who is causing offense should get the clue after the first ban and if they are actually a good member of the community they won't ever get to the 3rd, 4th or 5th offense. If they do get to the 3rd though, maybe making it less "private" is the key as they've now been called out for it. They will be embarrassed and that's the point. It's a much more effective punishment that way. This is why I don't believe the first offense should be made public because everyone has a bad day here and there and should at least be given the benefit of the doubt that they will improve without said embarrassment.

As far as I'm concerned after that though, the warning didn't work, the 24 hour ban didn't work, so maybe some public embarrassment will. The fact is, no one should ever hit a ban beyond 24 hours.

Sorry, but the bad behavior is very public, therefore, the results of that bad behavior should be public as well.

I read it as being about what the community in general would like to see do to make this forum a more welcome place where people (including newbies) aren't afraid to post their opinion without being ridiculed, bullied or even "hazed".

It's not the 1st time we had the discussion, I just hope it will be the last!
