| Posted: | | | | Uncharted Only Uses a Third of PS3 PowerQuote: Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells has said that Sony's first-party title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, is a long way from tapping the PS3 Cell processor's full potential.
Asked, "If Sony decided to increase the number of Cell processors and SPUs in a future release of the hardware, would Uncharted automatically take advantage of these new capabilities or would it just run at the same pace?"
Wells responded:
"Currently the Uncharted engine isn’t even taking complete advantage of all the processors on the Cell chip. We’re essentially using about 1/3 of the power that’s being offered at this time. So if the Cell processor was improved in future iterations of the hardware, it would have no effect on the overall performance of Uncharted."
Frankly, SPOnG considers this to be good news. Given the fact that we thoroughly enjoyed Uncharted - but thought it too short - we're more than a little bit interested to see how a sequel will look when Naughty Dog (hopefully/presumably) taps into more of the Cell's processing power.
Wells also laid out the state of play as far as downloadable content goes for Uncharted, saying, "Instead of adding features later and asking people to download them or buy them from the PSN, we included them on the disc and tied them into our Medal Point system. If you collect all of the treasure in the game and earn all 1000 Medal Points, you will get to unlock a ton of really great rewards like behind the scenes videos, tons of concept art, skins, rendering modes, and cheats. We thought it was cooler to include these things right on the Blu-Ray disc rather than force you to download them later." | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles | | | Last edited: by Ascended_Saiyan |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Ascended_Saiyan: Quote: Yes. It's an educated guess based on past events. You are guessing as well, but is it an educated guess based on past sales numbers for the nation? You guess is based on sales numbers, not availability. You don't know how many are available in Japan now and you didn't know how many were available two months ago. Nice try though. Quote: Doesn't your GUESS equates to...the Wii is so hard to find that consumers couldn't find the additional consoles USUALLY shipped to the stores? Or, maybe your GUESS equates to...Nintendo has been shipping about the same amount to stores in Japan for the past 10+ months, but all of a sudden they decided to cut that by a good amount coming up to the holiday season. Either way, it doesn't seem to be based on past or current events, so what IS your statement based off of? My guess is based on Wii availability last Christmas season and Wii availability right now at this very moment. It is the hardest console to find. Add to that the fact that I said it MIGHT be one of the reasons the PS 3 outsold the Wii. I never said it was THE reason. You are the one who is making unsubstantiated claims and pretending they are facts...but that is just par for the course. Quote: I didn't make the claim, you did. If you can't come up with any examples, just say so So, now, I'M the person that said something about 10 A/V trends? Strange...strange indeed. No, you made the claim that, "a lot of trends start in Japan FIRST and then spread to the rest of the world." I asked for 10 examples as that would be "a lot". Nice try at spinning though. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. | Posted: | | | | I heard a rumour that every HMV location in Edmonton (where I have just arrived for Christmas Vacation with the family) was going to get 20-40 Wii this morning...there were a couple Wii on the family Christmas list this year so I took the location in the oulet store common waiting in the cold and my mom staked out a location in the local mall. We hit our respective stores more than an hour before opening where, surprise, surprise, neither of us were the first in line. I guess I wasn't the only one to hear the rumour. It turned out it was true and the respective store managers were handing out claim tickets on a first come basis. My mom got number 25 at her location and I snagged 15 at mine. It was a good thing because each store was only allowing 1 Wii per customer. 10 minutes after the stores opened we walked out with 2 shiny new Wii. I was feeling pretty good after that because everywhere I shopped for the rest of the day (London Drugs, Future Shop, Best Buy, Walmart, Superstore) I heard people over and over again asking in vain if there were any Wii in stock. What made me laugh also was that in every one of those stores there were stacks and stacks of PS2s, Gamecubes, PS3s and 360s that no one was going anywhere near. Maybe once we get closer to Christmas and people accept that they are not going to find any Wii before the 25th they will finally settle on one of the 'lesser' machines. | | | Last edited: by bob9000 |

| Posted: | | | | Honestly the Wii is a complete HYPE machine!!! Don't get me wrong, I love it, it is a seriously fun console...Mario Galaxy is weill worth all the accolades...but where are all the quality titles??? Wii sports is great but let's see something else, something spectacular, because Mario Galaxy is not enough for me to shell out the cash on such a rare and hard to find console!!! | | | My Collection!!! |

That's how I came up with "Dr. Killpatient". I was playing such a game on a IBM 286 computer back in the early 90's and was becoming quite adept at killing my patients - it's surprisingly hard to draw a straight diagonal line with a mouse! When I first tried to save my progress, it asked me for my name. At that point, a certain Bugs Bunny cartoon was playing on the TV.... |

If you are interested in H3 and BioShock then you should definitely look at Orange Box too, specifically if you haven't played HL2 on PC. Orange box is phenomenal value for money as it includes HL2 (still the best video game ever imo) its two episodic sequels, Episodes 1 and 2, the fantastic Portal and the excellent TF2. |

I guess it depends on how you look at it. The Wii is not designed for the hard core gamer. It is a family entertainment system. It is something you play with your kids. If I didn't have kids, I probably wouldn't have gotten the Wii. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | So here are the November NPDs,
Hardware, sales followed by improvement over October: - DS Lite: 1.53m up 1.07m (234%) - Wii: 981K up 462K (89%) - Xbox 360: 770K up 404K (110%) - PSP: 567K up 281K (98%) - PS2: 496K up 312K (169%) - PS3: 466K up 345K (285%)
Sony still in last place and Nintendo just way way out there in the lead, but at least the 40GB PS3 has gotten some PS3s into peoples houses.
Now software: 1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) -- 1.57m 2. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) -- 1.12m 3. Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360) -- 980K 4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2) -- 967K 5. Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) -- 564KK 6. Mass Effect (Xbox 360) -- 473K 7. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) -- 444K 8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) -- 231.7K 9. Halo 3 (Xbox 360) -- 387K 10. Assassin's Creed (PS3) -- 377K
Incredible sales for COD4, GH3 (both Actiblizzion games) and Assassins Creed, and it looks like the price of entry for Rock Band really affected its total sales (although I'm sure it did well in terms of gross). Still no sign of Uncharted or Ratchet, Sony and its exclusives are really struggling.
P.S. 360 Rock Band came in 12th at 312K units with another 70K on PS2 and PS3. | | | Last edited: by stefc |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks for posting the US console hardware and software numbers. All the consoles same to have a decent increase in sales in November. Xbox 360 was a beast in software sales for Nov. in the US!
Could you please post the global numbers for all the consoles, in Nov., when they become available? Thanks in advance. | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles |

| Posted: | | | | PS3 to Hook Up With Your CellphoneQuote: The Remote Play functionality on the PS3/PSP is great, but Sony intends to extensively develop the feature set for broader external connectivity. Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, appeared in Tokyo and detailed how Sony intends to push the ever-booming success of the PS3. It is Sony's vision that the PS3 will eventually be able to link up to mobile phones, streaming all kind of media goodness on the go. As you can imagine, the very prospect has our PSP phone speculation senses running into overdrive.
The planned connectivity expansion is due to begin rolling out, in some form, by April 2008. Sir Stringer told Reuters, "PlayStation Network next year puts us in the direct line of fire with Apple and Microsoft." Competing with Apple and Microsoft, what on Earth could he possibly have in mind? We agree with the fine folks at Game Spot, who theorize the PS3's guns are lining up against iTunes and Xbox Live. What do you guys make of the comment? Just to get the ball rolling, here are a few PSP phone Burnout Paradise Demo Rollout Onto Xbox 360 and PS3Quote: Available now at the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace, the Paradise demo features three playable levels including three-person online play.
We downloaded and compared both versions side-by-side this afternoon, and after a cursory inspection, here's what we know. The PS3 version looks shinier. The Xbox 360 version has rumble. So its pretty much a wash.
More impressive, however, is the games fresh take on the genre. There are no game menus; a voice tutorial helpfully leads the way. It can take a while to get your bearings before running jumps, turning tricks, and winning races, but Paradise show promise in one of the meatiest demos released this year. Actually, the PS3 version has rumble also. Those with Dualshock 3 controllers have confirmed. PS3 DivX Support "Coming Soon"More Info on the PS3 Version of DivXQuote: Because the Xbox 360 is supporting DivX since their latest firmware update, Sony has no choice but to implement it also. Luckily for us they are not just going to copy, but also improve it! They signed a contract with DivX which will allow the full implementation of DivX and not just the support for it.
In other words, the Playstation 3 will not only be able to play DivX files, but developers will also be able to use it for their in-game movies. An advantage would be the lower power consumption when playing these in-game videos. Shellshock 2 Announced For Xbox 360 and PS3Quote: UK-based development studio Rebellion has confirmed that it's making the jump to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2008 with 'Shellshock 2', a sequel to the 2004 shooter 'Shellshock: 'Nam 67', for Eidos.
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley commented: "It's very much a mature product, it's a bit like 'Jacob's Ladder' or 'Apocalypse Now' in movie terms.
"It's troubling - deliberately so - it's meant to be challenging the nature of war, the horror and why people do these horrific things to each other... It'll be our first next-gen title, which is slightly nervewracking, but it's looking absolutely lovely." The original game, released on Xbox and PlayStation 2 and developed by Guerrilla Games, was largely derided at the time although it exceeded expectations at retail by selling around 800,000 copies.
News of the sequel comes three years after Eidos confirmed that 'Shellshock 2' was in the works, just months before rival British soft publisher SCi Entertainment won the battle for the 'House of Lara'. "Dragonball Z - Burst Limit" For PS3 and Xbox 360Quote: The latest issue of Japanese magazine V-Jump reveals that Namco Bandai is working on a next-gen title in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. The new title will be similar to the DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi series, published by Atari in Europe/North America, will have online multiplayer, cut-scenes driven, and support 16/9. | Posted: | | | | PS3 2.10 Firmware tomorrowLeaked on the Spanish, French and UK PS sites and since removed: Quote: Find out what features are included in PS3 system software update 2.10.
An update to the PS3 system software was released on December 18, 2007. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 2.10 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 2.10, you will need a minimum 120Mb of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).
The PLAYSTATION 3 system software version 2.10 update includes the following:
* Voice Changer
The Voice Changer feature has been added to voice / video chat. Visit the Voice Changer guide in Help & Support under PS3 at eu.playstation.com for more details.
Using this feature, you can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.
Other new or revised features in version 2.10
Music
* You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3TM system to enhance audio playback.
Video
* DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played. * * Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported. ** * [BD Data Utility] has been added. ***
*- To play VC-1 (WMV) format files, you must go to Settings > [System Settings] and set [Enable WMA Playback]. - Copyright-protected files or files that were encoded by using DivX 3.11 cannot be played. - Files that are 2GB or more cannot be played. ** You may now be able to use several additional features such as playback of two videos at the same time with Profile 1.1-compatible Blu-ray Discs. The available features vary depending on the disc. *** The management data that is used by the Blu-ray Disc is saved.
Note:
* This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions. * The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PLAYSTATION 3. Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software. * Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PS3 system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment. The voice chat thing sounds like what the Xbox 1 had and that was garbage, Divx and VC1 WMV sound good but the 2GB limitation is a shame. The 360 had a full FAQ on what can and cant be played with the Fall 07 update, lets hope Sony do the same (sidenote - I have been very impressed with what the 360 can play - I can even do 1080p 10-15mbps WMV files with 5.1 WMA using windows media sharing over a pretty lousy 802.11g network and it works perfectly. I hope PS3 can match it). But the good news is Profile 1.1. The fact it hadn't been added yet 6 weeks after Nov 1st was starting to worry me but if this leak is true, there should be alot of happy BD consumers/PS3 owners come tomorrow. Now Sony have to get to DTS-HD MA decoding and there will be nothing left to moan about PS3 BD. (But I will still moan about region coding ) | | | Last edited: by stefc |
