So how do you actually watch a 3D Blu-ray in 3D on a Profile 2 player? You are planning to bore me to death, right? You can still play the same disc in 2D, read them out, read Disc IDs... because it's the same Media Type. There aren't "Blu-ray 3D" burner/drives and "Blu-ray 2D" burner/drives, just "Blu-ray" burner/drives. Nice try. Blu-ray doesn't refer to the blue laser but the name of the format which just so happens to use a blue laser. Blu-ray BonusView, BD-Live, 3D, and Ultra HD are the same format according to the BDA.
The new Ultra HD Blu-ray players, which you will need to read the new higher capacity Media Type, are backward compatible.
Is that a question or a statement? Either way, yes, UHD Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray discs of other Profiles or using your terminology be backwards compatible. It may also depend on your TV. Mine has the option of displaying 3D as 2D. It sounds like we're talking about two different things. If your TV has an option to display a 3D image as 2D then that is a separate thing. You still need a Blu-ray 3D (Profile 5) player to output that 3D image from a 3D only disc, in the first place, for the TV to convert it to 2D. If a Blu-ray disc only supports 3D, and not 2D, then you can't watch that disc on a standard Profile 2 Blu-ray player. |

As mentioned above, that's mostly true, eg My Dredd 3D Blu plays on my 2D player (though I believe the quality is reduced); however they released a 3D copy of Top Gun that does not play on a 2D player (it just comes up with a splash screen saying that you need a 3D player) and didn't include a 2D disc in the box... so rdodolak is correct when he says only some 3D releases include a 2D disc if the 3D won't play on a non-3D machine.
