| Posted: | | | | Bearing in mind the number of times I see the same title from the same person with a single field updated at a time, I'd say the count is meaningless and is not necessarily a reflection of the amount of effort put into submitting a title.
PS not having a go at anybody, it's easy to miss stuff, just bringing the old adage 'lies, damn lies and statistics' into play. | | | IVS Registered: January 2, 2002 |

Not that it's called for or justified, but it's really kind of low hanging fruit.

| Posted: | | | | I'm remembering one specific case. I'm not sure if that is the one that Cliff is referring to or not. In that one specific case, the guy really kind of had it coming. Not that it makes it right of course, but it is what it is.
Regardless, I think the submission and vote counts will be abused. But I'd rather deal with those abuses on a case by case basis than lose that information. And I don't think many around here would stand by while someone like Cliff gets slammed for not contributing anything. Cliff raises a good point, but I say we just cross that bridge when we get there. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

| Posted: | | | | I don't know what the concern is about. I have no interest, other than perhaps curiosity, otherwise the data is of little use to me. Some users are far more concerned about this suff than I am, as I am reminded on a regular basis. What is important to me is the data I maintain locally on users, quality of work is far more important to me than quantity and my local data tells me at a glance those answers.

Like it or not, we do have some real boneheads show up every so often. And they tend to come in firing both guns and ask questions later. I agree with you completely. When I ran my BBS, there was always a certain percentage of jerks who came floating in thinking they were some kind of gift to mankind or something. They lasted about 18 milliseconds! No matter where you go on the internet, you find people like 'em, and they generate the same kind of reaction wherever they go. | | | John

Cliff raises a good point, but I say we just cross that bridge when we get there. If I'm thinking of the same situation Mark is I know what the poster had in mind when he posted and Mark has summed it up pretty well. What I would like to add to the discussion is this. The past few weeks were pretty unusual. We had people who thought the end of the world was here and we had those who didn't even sweat. Most I'm guessing were somewhere in between. There were many people who seemingly came from nowhere, many were long term users. Some of them attacked everything that has happened (or didn't happen) in the past 18 months yet they weren't here helping or adding to the community in any way. Their toy broke and they came running into the playroom to yell at everyone. While everyone has the same right to voice their opinion there were some users who got tired of the ranting from others who have done next to nothing since they joined and they let 'em know how they felt. You can add to the community in a number of ways. Submitting profiles is not the only way. Some find it very tedious and don't like to do it. No problem. Simply learning the rules and voting on profiles helps the community. Or posting in a thread, voting in a poll, helping someone with a question, etc. All of these add to the community. Heck, even the hundreds of lurkers that seem to be there can vote on profiles (just make sure you learn the rules first ). The uncertainty of the past month is now gone. Hopefully some of the animosity is as well. Unfortunately there are some users who said things that others will not soon forget. Such is life. I personally don't think we will have a problem with this in the future, with the occasional exception of course |

| Posted: | | | | I have made more contributions here than i ever did at intervocative, i have been using this program since oct-25-2000. When i purchase a new movie i wait a week or two to see if one of the "Power Users" enter it, i figure there is no sense in spending all the time it takes to do a full profile just to have someone else beat me to it. This has happend to me quite a few times when i first started using this program. If after awhile i find that no one else has done it, when i remember and find the time i will try to do as complete a profile as i can. Almost all of the titles i have contributed at this site are ones that seem to be more obscure or that maybe less people have, i was real happy to be able to contribute for a change. But after almost seven years of using this program i will NEVER complain that a certain title is not in the main database, i know how much time it takes to do a profile especially if you don't do alot of them. I personally think that if it isn't in the main database, either wait for someone to do it or do it yourself, but NEVER complain it isn't there. I thank ALL of the people that have contirbuted titles to this database, whether it is one or a thousand. It has made collecting DVD's a much more rewarding experience.
Vibrocount, is surf music still a popular genre in California? Makes me wish i lived there or could visit, i really like listening to dick dale and other surf music sometimes. I can't seem to find alot here in Illinois.

Rob Yes, and no. Dick Dale still tours (throughout the USA, in Chicago May 14 -- this Monday!), as do the Duo-Tones (in California), the Surfaris, Aqua Velvets, Los Straightjackets (USA & Spain), and of course the Ventures (Japan and USA). The Chantays seem to not be playing this year, but they did in 2006. Locally, the Pyronauts get a lot of gigs, we get some. When we were playing in 1997-1999, we got a lot of gigs. By 2004, nearly none. 2005 & 2006 were better, but about 1/3rd what we did in 1998. I'm gone for two weeks in July, but Paul's lining up American Grafitti days gigs in and around Modesto & Turlock this August. We just added Galt's Independence Day celebration on July 1st. We're not a bar band -- we play for families, often for marathons, downtown farmer's markets, car shows & benefit gigs. I understand there are many more surf music shows in southern California, where're we've never been asked... | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I understand there are many more surf music shows in southern California, where're we've never been asked... I have a few of dick dales cd's. I'm going to have to keep an eye on his website, maybe next time he comes around here i can go see him, I live about 40 miles from Chicago. Has your band tried it's hand at writing any surf style music? And if so is there a CD? I listen to a wide range of music, but some of the older style music is still my favorite. Rob |

I do the same thing. I'm happy to do them. But I'm not going to take an hour or so just to discover 10 other people are trying to submit the same profile. Unless it's something off beat. With little kids, I often get DVDs that aren't in the database. In those cases, I just add them. Especially if they're not new releases. But for the mainstream stuff, I don't bother unless it's been a while. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |
