A nightmare has become true - if you have 100 or 6000 DVD`s there is a point in near future when you will have only 100-6000 pieces of very expensive trash.

How are your experiences with older and very old DVD`s from the begining like one of the first Blockbusters like Godzilla and Alien Box Set?

Apart from a couple of well known problem titles, or poor early pressings, I believe 'near future' is widely recognised as 100 years or so, so I'm not too worried

100 year is greatly exaggerated. This will probably kill them eventually, but really, within a few years or so hard drive space should be cheap enough to just back the damn things up uncompressed. This is of course possible to do now, but unless you have a small collection, then you'll have to shell out some serious scratch.

I'm not worried about it.  They'll outlast me, so who cares?

Who knows, what'll happen. Maybe in ten years someone invented isolinear chips and we'll have to exchange our movie collection again.

VHS also didn't last forever and had it's disadvantages (decaying tape material for example)

Well, there is some truth in this.  I pulled out one from my collection this weekend that must have been maybe the 3rd or 4th that I bought as it was in a CD jewel case ( remember when DVDs were issued in them? ).  So it must be around 8 years old approx? Popped it in my good DVD player and up came that nasty error message that means it can't be read.    I haven't bothered trying it in other players yet - but it certainly is a goner as far as I'm concerned.  Many of the early DVDs were not anamorphic - and this is one so I would have replaced it anyway, eventually.  So yes, I have at least one that won't play that I know did once!

I'm not scared
I have about 1.300 DVD's and had to realize that some of those have a kind of "mist" on the surface which makes it unreadble for my DVD-players. Some DVD's could be rescued and some not. But considering the fact that i had to trash about 700 VHS tapes (dated from 1980...) a few years ago, i can live with a few spoilt discs!
The endurance of DVD's seems to be much better. and to be honest: we are collecting DVD's - we don't have to watch them. Stamp collectors wont' even bring their stamps in circulation

Sounds, to me, like you have a couple of defective DVDs.

I meant, where do you get this idea that all DVDs will do this?

Yep, I regularly check the first one I ever bought (Anaconda) late 98 and it hasn't 'degraded' in the way the disc looks and plays without any hitches.

Surely if it was an issue with early releases,  every disc should be failing?

I have had trouble with a few known titles like Heathers, but other known problem discs play fine. The DVD 18 (dual layer. dual side) is the thorn in my side. I have had more than one crap out on me, even if they played fine the first time. But they usually suck right out of the box.

Being a father of a young son and finding many disks laying about gathering scratches, I've went and backed up all my DVD's to the hard drive and watch those instead of the disks.

I have read an article in Chip or PC Welt Magazine - i cant damn find it - were they have tested pressed original DVD`s, ROM and RW Discs. With conclusion that for exsample any burned DVD last not longer then 5 years, depending how it is stored, dark upright in keepcase, maybe up to 10.

So imagine you store your childrens Pics over the next 10 years, documenting how they grow up - and find out after 10 years - all gone by unreadable media?

How i get the idea all DVDs will do this? Its a thing about how you store them. All DVDs i know are printed. The print is chemical and then more humidity they get - like in a garage - then faster the print chemicals will destroy the reflection layer and the DVD becomes unreadable.
